PROJECT 1: Opening: As a whole class, students will read a story entitled, “A World without African Americans.” After reading the story, students will reflect and write a minimum of one paragraph answering one of three questions. (One paragraph is equivalent to five to six sentences) Today’s question is: Do you feel that this story has any truth to it? Explain.
Activity: OPTION A: From the listing of African American inventors and scientists provided, students will choose one individual to complete a one (1) full page report. In addition to presenting biographical information about their chosen individual, the report will contain pertinent information about the invention that was created by the inventor, such as the purpose of the product or device and how the product or device has impacted the world in which we live.
Students will work individually to complete this activity. Furthermore, this report must be typed using Microsoft Word, or an equivalent word processing tool, and submitted electronically to the instructor. Specific criteria, as well as a rubric or scoring guide, will be given for the student to follow.
OPTION B: From the listing of African American inventors and scientists provided, students will choose one individual to complete a four (4) page foldable. In addition to presenting biographical information about their chosen individual, the foldable will contain pertinent information about the invention that was created by the inventor, such as the purpose of the product or device and how the product or device has impacted the world in which we live.
Students will work individually to complete this activity. The foldable must be done by hand, and then scanned in order to submit an electronic copy to the instructor. Specific criteria, as well as a rubric or scoring guide, will be given for the student to follow.
PROJECT 2: Opening: Based on the reading of the story from Project 1’s Opening, students will answer the second of three questions. Today’s question is: How did hearing the story make you feel? Explain. Like the first response, the second response needs to be completed in at least one paragraph minimum.
Activity: OPTION A: From the listing of African American inventors and scientists provided, students will choose one individual to complete a slide show presentation. The chosen African American inventor or scientist must be different from the individual that was chosen for Project 1. In addition to presenting biographical information about their chosen individual, the presentation will contain pertinent information about the invention that was created by the inventor, such as the purpose of the product or device and how the product or device has impacted the world in which we live. Students will work in groups of two (2) to complete this activity. Furthermore, this presentation must be completed using Microsoft PowerPoint, or an equivalent slide show presentation tool, and submitted electronically to the instructor. Specific criteria, as well as a rubric or scoring guide, will be given for the student to follow.
OPTION B: From the listing of African American inventors and scientists provided, students will choose one individual to complete a video PSA (public service announcement). In addition to presenting biographical information about their chosen individual, the PSA will contain pertinent information about the invention that was created by the inventor, such as the purpose of the product or device and how the product or device has impacted the world in which we live.

Like the first and second response, the third response needs to be completed in at least one paragraph minimum.
Activity: OPTION A: From the listing of African American inventors and scientists provided, students will choose one individual to complete an electronic timeline. The chosen African American inventor or scientist must be different from the individual that was chosen for Project 1 and 2. The timeline will include 10-12 events significant the inventor and/or his or her invention.
Students will work in groups of two (2) to complete this activity. Furthermore, this timeline must be completed using Microsoft Excel, or an equivalent spreadsheet tool, and submitted electronically to the instructor. Specific criteria, as well as a rubric or scoring guide, will be given for the student to follow.
